Row over flags removal in Birmingham and
Personally, I've I'll fly my flag with
with pride, no problem. Um, if people
decide that that's racist, that's that's
their call. But, uh, it is the country
flag that we fly in our own country.
>> These are the streets of Birmingham, and
what you're looking at is a movement
that's been gathering momentum online,
one about patriotism and national
identity. In some parts of Britain,
campaigners have been putting up the St.
George's and the Union flag in both
Birmingham and London's Tower Hamlets.
But now both councils say they're taking
the flags down from their lamp posts.
Reacting, the prime minister's official
spokesperson has said patriotism will
always be an important thing.
A spokesperson for Tower Hamlet's
Council has said, "While we recognize
people wish to express their views, we
have a responsibility to monitor and
maintain council infrastructure. Where
flags are attached to councilowned
infrastructure without permission, they
may be removed as part of routine
maintenance." Birmingham City Council
says it recognizes the importance of the
Union flag and the flag of St. George as
symbols of national pride. But when it
comes to items attached to lamp posts,
it's normal procedure for them to be
removed on a regular basis due to health
and safety. They have said people are
free to hang flags from their homes.
>> But allows you to to show your flag off
your own property without having to
worry about if the council is going to
take them down or not.
>> And that's exactly what Anthony Farrell
is doing. He's pivoted a part of his
business to sell flag poles. So, I just
come up with the idea like I've done in
the past um to actually put uh fix the
poles to people's houses properties. So,
I made one for myself, took it home on
Friday, fixed it to the wall and bought
a flag from the local shop and uh put it
up to get some photos ready to
advertise.
>> And this was the why.
>> I think a little bit with the
immigration problems and uh the hotels
and the boats and god knows what else.
And I think people are just kind of
having enough now. And uh I think this
is the first part of people being able
to show that uh that response if you
like um show a little bit of pride and
flying our flag in our own country.
